Dover, DE,
March 27, 2008— The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is
providing an additional $35,000 in conservation funding to farmers in Kent
and Sussex counties for poultry windbreaks. Interested farmers have until
Friday, April 4, 2008 to sign up for financial assistance through the
Agricultural Management Assistance (AMA) program. AMA provides cost-share
payments to agricultural producers to voluntarily address issues such as
water quality, water management and erosion control by incorporating
conservation into their farming operations.
“Our sign-up
window is shorter than normal due to amount of funding,” said Tim Garrahan,
Farm Bill program manager. “Even still, the environmental benefits offered
by poultry windbreaks to our air and soil quality are well worth a trip to
the nearest USDA Service Center to find out more information.”
Poultry
windbreaks help improve air quality by removing dust, feathers and ammonia
particulates that can leave poultry operations. Windbreaks also remove
excess nutrients from the soil and reduce odors.
