Local Food Systems in a Global Environment
This research project is part of a collaborative of 18 land-grant universities that is examining
local food production, processing, distribution and consumption in the face of a gloabalizing economy.
The first phase of the project (Countywide Food System Studies) develops countywide food system
assessments using food system indicators and stakeholder interviews. The second phase (Sustaining
Local Food Systems) examines how specific counties or regions are responding to global economic and
social trends by developing strategies that support more local or regional food systems.
Reports showcase the initiatives of innovative producers, processors, consumers and community
businesses to sustain their own local food systems. For additional background and rationale for
this research, see, Rationale.
