IEEE Standards Association Trademark Use Guidelines

GUIDELINES FOR THE PROPER INFORMATIONAL USE OF IEEE STANDARDS ASSOCIATION (IEEE-SA) TRADEMARKS
Like all trademarks, the trademarks owned by the IEEE identify our brand names. Please keep this in mind when referring to any IEEE trademark in any manner or medium. These guidelines and requirements are based in legal standards set forth in practice under U.S. trademark law and the trademark laws of most foreign countries. Misuses or exploitative uses of the IEEE's trademark may be unlawful. These "Guidelines" will explain what the IEEE-SA expects you to do if you wish to make informational reference to any and all of the IEEE's trademarks. The IEEE will enforce these guidelines.

1. Clearly display the following form of trademark notice (selecting the appropriate referenced IEEE trademark) on the cover, title page, welcome screen, home page, packaging, labeling, or advertising of your publication, product, or web site:

[Identify TRADEMARK] is a [registered, if applicable] trademark of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc., (IEEE). This [publication/ product/website] is not endorsed or approved by the IEEE.

Please note: The above acknowledgments must not be abbreviated without the prior written approval of the IEEE.
2. All registered IEEE-SA trademarks must include the registered trademark symbol "®" with the first and/or most prominent reference to the trademark on book covers (front, back and spine), CD(ROM) labels, and in each separate section, product packaging and title page and/or software opening screen. For non-registered IEEE trademarks, please use the "™" symbol after the mark.
3. The trademark must be used as an adjective followed by a generic term such as "standard", "recommended practice" or "test suite" immediately after every reference to any IEEE-SA trademark -- e.g., "802® standard" or "344™ recommended practice," or "POSIX® test suite."
4. Separate your company name (or trademark) from the referenced IEEE-SA trademark, so that it is clear that the product, service or site is your company's work and not to be confused with a product or service of the IEEE-SA.
5. Always show IEEE-SA trademarks in plain block letters. Do not add designs or stylized typeface. Do not use any the IEEE-SA trademarks in a transformed style. Do not render the IEEE-SA's trademarks so that they are significantly more prominent or eye-catching than any other word in the title or description. Typeface color should be the same for all words in the title.
6. Do not use any of the IEEE-SA's trademarks alone as a title or as a noun in any other context. An IEEE-SA trademark must always be used as an adjective followed by a generic term, as in "802® test suite" or "1394™ standard."
7. Do not make any IEEE-SA trademark a part of your own business name, as part of a brand name for your products, or as an Internet domain name. The IEEE-SA's trademarks (brands) may be used only to refer to the IEEE-SA's brands of products and services. Exploitation of IEEE-SA trademarks in third party domain names may be unlawful if used in "bad faith".
8. Do not use IEEE-SA trademarks in a possessive or plural form, such as "802s," or "POSIX's."
9. Do not translate or transliterate any IEEE-SA trademark in another language.
10. Copies of all proposed covers (front, back, and spine), title pages, software opening or welcome screens, web site home pages, labels, packaging, and advertising of all products and publications in any medium referencing any IEEE-SA trademark, should be submitted for review and approval before production, publication or distribution. English translations for all foreign characters must be provided. If materials are faxed to the IEEE-sa, please provide a written description of the colors used for the wording and all background colors. A response will typically be given within ten (10) business days of receipt but please plan to submit your materials well in advance of your publication deadlines. Materials should be sent to:
