BMI’s Involvement In The International Marketplace

BMI’s role, just like the protection of copyright, is international in scope. The group of songwriters, composers and publishers we represent includes individuals from the 60 foreign performing rights organizations with which BMI has reciprocal performing rights agreements. To insure the protection of copyright on an international basis, BMI actively supported the Berne Convention adherence legislation. To carry out our international mission of copyright protection and inter-societal cooperation, BMI executives have travelled around the globe to lay the groundwork for new agreements in such heretofore untapped markets as the Commonwealth of Independent States, the People’s Republic of China and the many nations of Southeast Asia.

The value and substance of the BMI repertoire will continue to grow as BMI’s outreach to the international marketplace expands. The existing and potential foreign income attributable to the works of BMI songwriters, composers and publishers has become a significant share of their compensation. The creation of an increasingly global marketplace is a fact of life, and the inroads BMI has made into all regions of that marketplace will insure that our songwriters, composers and publishers will profit from the use of their music.
