Activities of the NORA Manufacturing Sector Council

Council activities are outlined below. Contact the Sector Assistant Coordinator with any questions or comments.

September 2008
Fourth meeting to continue drafting the strategic plan by shaping the intermediate goals and to begin identifying partners who could participate in implementation. Henry Jajuga, from the National Labor College (NLC), and Jennifer McNelley, from the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), presented current projects associated with occupational research and training for the Manufacturing Sector. The Council made significant progress in writing the intermediate goals for the following ten strategic goal areas: contact with objects and equipment, falls, musculoskeletal disorders, hearing loss, respiratory conditions and diseases, cancer, understudied and vulnerable populations, small businesses and specific sub-sectors, emerging risks, and catastrophic incidents.

April 2008
Third meeting to draft strategic and activity/output goals. Building on the five strategic topic areas identified previously, the Council identified ten strategic goals. In small group exercises, participants identified clusters of activity and output goals that would be required to accomplish the strategic goals. Work will continue on a draft strategic plan for public comment expected to be available by July.

September 2007
Second meeting to draft strategic and intermediate goals. Workgroups were formed in the five strategic topic areas of surveillance, exposure assessment and etiological research, intervention development and evaluation, partnerships, and high risk sub-sectors and populations. Each workgroup will draft a complete version of its portion of the strategic plan and highlight priorities.

January 2007
The first meeting of the NORA Manufacturing Sector Council was held to outline sector issues, identify key stakeholder organizations for possible participation, and plan future actions. Council members started to develop a list of research issues that should be considered by the council in the development of the Manufacturing Strategic Plan. The categories of issues under consideration include: Chemical Exposures, Organization of Work, Safety Management Characteristics, Worker Training, Small Business, International, Vulnerable Populations, Respiratory Disease, Ergonomics and Musculoskeletal Disorders, Nanotechnology and Exposure to Ultrafine particles, Surveillance / Indicators / Performance Measurement, Dermal Exposures, Noise-Induced Hearing Loss, Emerging Technology, and Work-life.
