Feeder Cattle Auction Report for 09/17/2008

Receipts: 1945     Last Week:  2502    Year Ago:  2831

   Compared to last week, feeder steers and heifers traded 3.00 to 5.00 
lower with some 600 lb steers as much as 7.00 lower. Holstein steers sold 
3.00 to 5.00 lower. A special wean/vac sale was held in conjunction with 
the regular weekly feeder cattle auction. These offerings did find more 
outlets than those unweaned consignments, as is common, but at the time 
of year when warm days and cool nights can create respiratory problems 
buyers are especially cautious. Disappointing financial markets have also 
pressured the feeder market this week and economic uncertainty is the 
quickest way to hold up even the most optimistic of cattlemen. This 
week’s offering was a near even split of calves and yearlings with a good 
portion of the calves available carrying some extra flesh. Supply 
moderate and demand light to moderate. The feeder supply consisted of 53 
percent steers and bulls, 12 percent Holsteins and 35 percent heifers; 48 
percent of all feeders weighed over 600 lbs.
