Intel 4Q sales, profit plunge as chip demand declines
Santa Clara computer-chip giant Intel on Thursday reported a steep drop in profit and overall sales for its fourth-quarter, reflecting the extraordinary plunge in worldwide demand for personal computers and other gadgets containing semiconductors.

While the circumstances are different, the directors at each company have been accused of being too deferential to management. Apple's board should have been more aggressive in managing the news about Steve Jobs' illness, critics say, while Yahoo's board should have pressed on the Microsoft deal. But there is not a checklist for boards to follow, some experts say, and the boards have a lot of leeway.

U.S. retail sales of games, game machines and accessories totaled $5.1 billion last month, according to market research firm NPD Group. Not only was that up 9 percent from December 2007, but it marked the first time that the industry's sales have surpassed the $5 billion mark in any month.  
 
Money-losing Sunnyvale computer-chip maker Spansion said Thursday it will delay making payment on some of its debt and is considering selling itself or merging with another company.

At her first companywide meeting in Sunnyvale on Wednesday morning, Yahoo's new CEO Carol Bartz indicated her gut instinct was to keep the search advertising business at Yahoo.
