The themes of the Conference were: prospects for food and energy demands by 2015 and projections for 2030-2050; defining the investment envelope; and financing mechanisms and implementation strategies.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND FOOD SECURITY IN PACIFIC ISLAND COUNTRIES

December 2008 - With increasing global temperatures, rising sea levels and more frequent and
intense extreme weather events, Pacific islands countries, especially those in
warmer latitudes, are the most vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change.
Their populations are expected to be among the first that will need to adapt to
climate change or even abandon their traditional homeland and relocate. Unless
we act now, climate change will constitute a major barrier to the achievement of
sustainable development and viable food production goals for all Pacific island
countries, while threatening the very existence of many of them.

FAO-GTOS CONTRIBUTION TO THE 2ND EDITION OF THE WORLD ATLAS OF MANGROVES
|
December 2008 - The International Society for Mangrove Ecosystems (ISME) and its partners are publishing a new version of the World Atlas of Mangroves, with funding primarily from the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). The new Atlas will describe the recent status of mangrove forests around the world, with detailed estimates of changes in mangrove forests at the regional and national levels. The Atlas aims to contribute towards the effective management of mangrove forests for sustainable production of timber, fisheries and other products without compromising their environmental, ecological and socio-economic value.

TRAINING COURSE ON
LAND COVER MAPPING IN SUPPORT OF AREA FRAME STATISTICAL ANALYSIS. CASE STUDY OF WEST SHOWA (ETHIOPIA)

December 2008 - The Central Statistic Agency of Ethiopia, in collaboration with the European Union (EU) and FAO, is carrying out an area frame survey study in the West Showa region for agricultural statistics purposes. Detailed and accurate land cover information contributes at improving analysis result. The Environmental Assessment and Management Unit has organized and conducted a training course to present its experience, “know how”, procedures, standards and tools on land cover mapping.

DEVELOPMENT AND HARMONIZATION OF LAND COVER CLASSIFICATION IN THE HINDU KUSH-HIMALAYAS (HKH) REGION

December 2008 - Land cover assessment and monitoring of its dynamics are essential requirements for environmental analysis and planning. Climate change, land cover/land use change and population dynamics are issues that have a transnational dimension. FAO’s Global Land Cover Network has launched the Regional HArmonization Programme (RHAP) initiative.
