The Office of the Associate Director advises the NIEHS Director and the NIEHS senior leadership team on a wide range of program and management issues, including trans-NIH efforts, strategic partnerships and advocacy. Sharon Hemond Hrynkow, Ph.D., began serving as NIEHS Associate Director on October, 15, 2007. Dr. Hrynkow is focusing on management issues of priority to the NIEHS Acting Director; building and strengthening internal and external NIEHS partnerships in strategic areas, including environmental health research related to global warming, and to gender issues; and enhancing outreach and advocacy efforts to external partner agencies. The Office of the Associate Director is located on the NIH campus in Bethesda, Md, where Dr. Hrynkow can serve as a visible presence representing the mission of the NIEHS to other NIH Institutes and to other federal agencies and communities in the DC metropolitan area. Hrynkow serves as Associate Director, National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), National Institute of Health (NIH), a position she has held since October 2007. The mission of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is to reduce the burden of human illness and disability by understanding how the environment influences the development and progression of human disease. Dr. Hrynkow leads the NIEHS effort on climate change and on gender issues as related to environmental health, among other responsibilities. Dr. Hrynkow has worked on global health and diplomatic issues for 15 years, including in previous positions at NIH of Acting Director (2004 to 2006) and Deputy Director (2000 to 2007) of the Fogarty International Center (FIC). Her efforts led the creation of new programs to support junior scientists in resource-limited nations, new ways to mentor women in science in those same settings, and novel approaches to supporting US undergraduates and graduate students in global health, among others. At the US Department of State, she led interagency efforts culminating in the State Department’s first U.S. International Strategy on HIV/AIDS. Prior to joining NIEHS, Dr. Hrynkow served as Senior Advisor, United Nations Foundation, where she focused on energy policy and climate change as related to human health. Dr. Hrynkow received her B.A. in Biology from Rhode Island College and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience from the University of Connecticut. She completed post-doctoral studies at the University of Oslo, Norway in the field of developmental neurobiology. She serves on numerous Boards and Advisory Groups, including the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on Environmental Health Sciences, Research and Medicine; the AAAS Committee on Science, Engineering and Public Policy; and the Society for Neuroscience International Affairs Committee. She is an elected member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has received many awards and honors, including the King of Norway’s Order of Merit and the Presidential Rank Award for outstanding efforts in the Senior Executive Service.
