SNAP is committed to customer service by telling citizens about the benefits of participating in this nutrition program, and connecting people to other community and state agencies for the help they need.

SNAP is administered by the Department of Family Services, is the cornerstone of the federal food assistance program, and provides crucial support to needy households and to those moving from welfare to work. SNAP benefits are distributed electronically through the Wyoming electronic benefits card. Our mission is to support better nutrition with low-income households. SNAP follows rules from the federal government and the Food Stamp Act of 1977. The Food Stamp Act of 1977, as amended, requires states to operate a SNAP Employment and Training (E&T) program. The E&T program connects SNAP users with resources needed to keep a job or get a better paying job.

Wyoming's SNAP program works with The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) to get commodities to soup kitchens, food banks or other organizations helping low-income households. Commodities are collected at a distribution center in Casper and then taken to more than 40 organizations statewide to help needy people.

The Cent$ible Nutrition program is also part SNAP. Cent$ible Nutrition is a collaboration between the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service and DFS. The program is available in all Wyoming counties and on the Wind River Indian Reservation. Cent$ible Nutrition helps SNAP users learn about cooking and shopping. When people join, they get a free computer diet analysis, cookbook, calendar and nutrition and cooking lessons. Classes are free. Nutrition educators help with meal planning, too. For more information about the Cent$ible Nutrition Program, call toll free 877-219-4646, or visit the Cooperative Extension Service Office.

The DFS team works hard to keep Wyoming's program running smoothly and honestly. DFS wins high praises from the USDA for making few errors in processing applications. Wyoming also was awarded by the American Public Human Service Association for excellence in customer service by improving its SNAP participation.

Many who qualify for SNAP don't get it because they don't apply. In fact only three of five people who qualify actually apply for and get SNAP. The SNAP works to reach everyone who qualifies to get the help they need. For a family of three to qualify, they can earn $1,907 gross monthly income or $1,467 each month in take-home pay. To learn more about SNAP, to apply or get help making a food budget, call the local DFS office in any of the state's 23 counties. The address and phone numbers for local DFS offices are listed at http://dfsweb.state.wy.us/districts/base2.htm
