Mississippi Agriculture Overview

Agriculture is Mississippi’s number one industry, employing approximately 25% of the state’s workforce either directly or indirectly. Agriculture in Mississippi is a 6.4 billion-dollar industry. There are approximately 42,000 farms in the state covering 11 million acres. The average size farm is composed of 262 acres. Agriculture makes a significant contribution to all 82 counties. In celebration of the efforts of those who work so hard to feed and clothe us, we present this overview of Mississippi’s top ten agricultural crops.

1   POULTRY / EGGS - $2.33 BILLION
     
  > Approximately 850 million broilers were produced in 2007.
> Broiler chickens weigh an average of 5.5 lbs. each.
> 1,928 Farms.
 
     
2   FORESTRY - $1.11 BILLION
     
  > 18,000 acres.
> 125,000 forest landowners.
 
     
3   SOYBEANS - $511 MILLION
     
  > 58,630,000 bushels in 2007.
> 3,034 farms.
 
     
4   CORN - $438 MILLION
     
  > 126,900,000 bushels produced in 2007.
> 2,099 farms.
 
     
5   COTTON - $434 MILLION
     
  > 1,330,000 bales produced in 2007.
> 1,596 farms.
 
     
6   CATFISH - $223 MILLION
     
 

> 370 operations.
> 94,000 acres in production.


 
     
7   CATTLE - $191 MILLION
     
  > 990,000 head in 2007.
> 21,000 farms.
 
     
8   RICE - $144 MILLION
     
  > 13,892,000 hundredweight rice produced in 2007.
> 461 farms.
 
     
9   HAY - $102 MILLION
     
  > 750,000 acres harvested.
> 1.5 million tons produced.
 
     
10   HORTICULTURE - $100 MILLION
     
  > $100 million value of production for 2007 in horticulture crops excluding sweet potatoes.
> $80 million value of production for 2007 in sweet potatoes.
> Horticulture crops include:  vegtables, melons, potatoes, sweet potatoes, fruits, tree nuts, berries, nursery, greenhouses, floriculture, sod and Christmas tree famrs.
