Development and Evaluation of Nanofiber-Based Filter Media - FY07

NOTE: This document is provided for historical purposes only.

Objective

  • The objective of this project is to produce nanofiber-based filter media and assess their performance against aerosol particles
Nanofiber Filter material at 4 different resolutions

Applicable Standards

  • 42 CFR Part 84
  • ISO TC94/SC15
  • ANSI Z88

Key Partners

  • NCSU - Nanofiber filter production
  • NIOSH, Cincinnati - Nanofiber characteristics
  • CFR - Exchange of information
  • Donaldson, 3M, Dragger - Exchange of information

Stakeholders

  • Manufacturers - Design new filters
  • Users - Respiratory protection and comfort
  • NIOSH - New generation filters for respiratory protection

Project Scope

  • Literature search on nanofiber production
  • Standardize methodologies for nanofiber production
  • Generate nanofiber-based filter media and characterize
  • Evaluate nanofiber filter media for respiratory protection

Milestones

  • Project tasks completed and final report submitted (December, 2005)
  • Project will not be continued due to priorities for other projects

Outputs

  • Project final report from NCSU

Outcomes

  • Data from this study could be used by standards development organizations to set performance standards.
  • Data on nanofiber generation and the performance of filter media could be useful to manufacturers to develop improved respiratory protection products
