Rural/Natural Amenities

In addition to producing food and fiber, agricultural land provides amenities such as scenic farm views, wildlife habitats, and an absence of development. As part of its research on rural and natural amenities, ERS analyzes the importance of amenities and trends in the conversion of agricultural land, and helps inform discussions on agricultural land protection policies.


Spotlights

Farmland Protection: The Role of Public Preferences for Rural Amenities—This report examines the structure of programs to protect farmland-based rural amenities across the 48 contiguous States, and the implementation of these programs in selected States. The report also assesses how farmland protection programs fit into the broader array of rural land conservation programs.

Development at the Urban Fringe and Beyond: Impacts on Agriculture and Rural Land—This report examines the forces driving urban development, its character and impacts on agriculture and rural communities, the means available to channel and control growth, and the pros and cons of potential Federal roles in responding to urban development and growth.
