Food Safety Policy

USDA, along with other Federal agencies, has responsibility for many regulations and initiatives to assure a safe and affordable food supply. ERS research helps decisionmakers assess the effectiveness of policies and programs by evaluating the benefits of human illness prevention, cost of industry compliance, economic incentives for innovation, and the net costs of government information programs, regulations, and enforcement.

Spotlights

Foodborne Illness Cost Calculator—This interactive web-based tool allows users to estimate the cost of foodborne disease, using a variety of assumptions about the costs of treating foodborne illness, the value of lost productivity and premature death, and the number of cases of disease.

Food Safety and International Trade: Research Briefs—Expanding food trade has brought into sharper relief the divergence among countries' food safety regulations and standards. This set of research briefs presents some of the highlights of the ERS report, "International Trade and Food Safety: Economic Theory and Case Studies."
