The Southern Area is home to four
Interagency Hotshot Crews (IHCs):
|
The Asheville Interagency Hotshot Crew (IHC) program, initiated in
1989, is one of only three hotshot programs in the nation specifically
designed to develop future fireline supervisors. The Asheville IHC is
hosted by the National Forests in North Carolina, and is based out of
Asheville, NC. The Crew Superintendent is Steve Little. The program is
operational from January through May. The majority of assignments are in
the southeast for suppression and prescribed burning, but the crew has
been assigned to other geographic areas numerous times.

The Augusta IHC, established in 2001,
is hosted by the George Washington/Jefferson National Forest in Virginia,
and is based out of Augusta Springs, VA. The Crew Superintendent is Oscar
Montijo. The crew is generally available from
the first week of March through the first week of September.

The Cherokee IHC is hosted by the
Cherokee National Forest, and is based out of Unicoi, TN. The Crew Superintendent
is Dennis Trentham. The crew is generally
available from mid-March through early June, and again from late July
through late November.

The Jackson IHC is sponsored by the
Bureau of Land Management, and is based out of Jackson, MS. The Crew
Superintendent is Lamar Lidell. For 2005, the
crew is available from June 7th to October 29th.
