25 Aug. -Operation Ocean Shield, NATO’s contribution to international efforts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa, commenced 17 August after the North Atlantic Council (NAC) approved the mission. Operation Ocean Shield builds on the experience gained during Operation Allied Protector, NATOs’ previous counter-piracy mission, and develops a distinctive NATO role based on the broad strength of the Alliance by adopting a more comprehensive approach to counter-piracy efforts.
12 Aug. -MONS, Belgium – Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), welcomed NATO’s new Secretary General, His Excellency Mr. Anders Fogh Rasmussen, to the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), on August 12. This was Mr. Rasmussen’s first visit to SHAPE, the headquarters of NATO’s Allied Command Operations, since becoming Secretary General.
06 Aug. -Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), made his second visit to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan August 5-6. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, who was on his first visit to the region since taking office on 1 August 2009, accompanied him for part of the trip.
30 Jul. - MONS, Belgium - Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), travelled to Pristina, Kosovo, on 29 July, to meet with Kosovo Security Force (KSF) Minister Fehmi Mujota; Commander of NATO’s Kosovo Force (KFOR), Lieutenant-General Giuseppe Emilio Gay; and KFOR Multinational Task Forces (MNTF) commanders.
27 Jul. - The Supreme Commander Allied Powers Europe, Adm. James Stavridis, held talks at SHAPE headquarters today with the incoming commander of Headquarters Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, French General Stephane Abrial.
27 Jul. - Admiral James STAVRIDIS presided to the Change of Command Ceremony in Joint Command Lisbon, where Vice Admiral Bruce W. CLINGAN, USA Navy transferred the Command to General Philippe STOLTZ FRA Army.
14 Jul. - ROTA, Spain — Admiral James Stavridis, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), today hosted NATO’s Secretary General, the Permanent Representatives of the North Atlantic Council (NAC), and the Chairman and members of the Military Committee (MC) at the bi-annual NAC-MC Sea Day held in the Spanish port city of Rota. NATO’s Standing Maritime Group One (SNMG1) vessels were in port to provide the platforms from which the participants observed naval manoeuvres.
02 Jul. - MONS, Belgium — Admiral James Stavridis today became NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR) assuming command of Allied Command Operations from outgoing SACEUR, General John Craddock.
20 May - A NATO spokesperson has a difficult job and must have the skills to communicate his commander’s policies and stances on a variety of issues. The spokesperson’s words and actions are dissected by the world media and the manner in which he represents his commander can influence the level of host nation support for a NATO mission and future operations.
20 May - MONS, Belgium — Dr. Ljubica Jelušič, The Republic of Slovenia’s Minister of Defence, visited SHAPE Headquarters on 19 May, meeting with General John Craddock, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, to discuss Slovenia’s participation in ongoing NATO operations.
