Environmental Conservation
Protecting the environment
To protect the quality of South Carolina's environment, Clemson
scientists are studying the impacts made by agriculture and timber
production, as well as by commercial development, industries, cities
and golf courses.
Environmental conservation in agricultural production
includes development of integrated pest management strategies that
incorporate biological controls, such as targeted insect viruses
or predators. It also includes agroecology, a practice that minimizes
soil disturbance and the use of chemicals.
In addition, researchers are studying the ways that
housing developments, golf courses and urban development, as well
as agriculture, can cause movement of fertilizers, pesticides and
other contaminants into surface and ground waters.
Other studies are developing environmentally sensitive
methods to control insects, weeds and diseases on golf courses,
athletic fields and residential or commercial landscapes.
In addition, coastal ecology studies are tracking
forest regeneration after natural and man-made disturbances, as
well as ways to use natural materials to prevent erosion along the
intracoastal waterway.
