Office of Research, Development, and Technology

FHWA's Office of Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) leads in the development of a nationally coordinated research and technology program; champions the advancement of highway technological innovation in support of FHWA strategic goals and performance objectives; advances knowledge through research, development, testing, and evaluation services; and provides support and assistance throughout FHWA in matters relating to research, development, and technology (RD&T).

RD&T is organized into six offices located at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center:

Office of Infrastructure Research & Development
Continually improves infrastructure-related technology through research, development, and testing; through an outreach process to identify future targets of opportunity; and with the pursuit of advanced research initiatives. Supports FHWA offices and resource centers in the development of near-term RD&T program plans and projects; demonstration field tests of technologies; and evaluation of customer needs, acceptance, and benefits of new infrastructure-related products.

Office of Operations Research & Development
Continually improves operations-related technology through research, development, and testing; through an outreach process to identify future targets of opportunity; and with the pursuit of advanced research initiatives. Supports FHWA offices and resource centers in the development of near term RD&T program plans and projects; demonstration field tests of technologies; and evaluation of customer needs, acceptance, and benefits of new operations related products.

Office of Corporate Research, Technology, and Innovation Management Research and Technology Program Development and Partnership Team
Develops and executes policy, budget, program management, and administrative mechanisms to enable a nationwide FHWA research, development, and technology program to be carried out in cooperation with our partners... [more]

Develops and executes a comprehensive research, development, and technology communications strategy and marketing plan in support of FHWA-wide RD&T programs and the technology delivery needs of the Core Business Units and Resource Centers... [more]

Office of Safety Research & Development
Continually improves safety-related technology through research, development, and testing; through an outreach process to identify future targets of opportunity; and with the pursuit of advanced research initiatives. Supports FHWA offices and resource centers in their goal to eliminate highway crashes in the development of near term RD&T program plans and projects; demonstration of field tests of technologies; and evaluation of customer needs, acceptance, and benefits of new safety-related products.

RD&T performs three overall roles:

......Coordinator of the development of the national highway research and technology agenda, working with other offices in the Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration and with our partners in the State and local government, academia, industry, and professional organizations.

.....Investigator of new and existing technologies to improve the safety, efficiency, and operation of our highway system.

.....Disseminator of the results of our research to the highway community where it may be placed into practice.
