CU-Boulder Sources on the New Administration and Policy Issues

History in the Making. Brian DeLay, associate professor of history, can discuss what makes it into the history books and why. He is co-author of the popular history textbooks "Nation of Nations: A Narrative History of the American Republic" and "Us: A Narrative History." Health Care Reform. Hank Brown, professor of political science, CU president emeritus, former congressman, and U.S. Senator and legislator, is teaching an undergraduate political science class this semester titled "The Politics of Health Care Reform." The class will feature lectures by health care experts and prominent politicians and thought leaders including Gov. Bill Ritter and former Colorado Gov. Dick Lamm. U.S. Military and Defense Issues. Michael Kanner, instructor of political science, can discuss American foreign policy, terrorism, the U.S. military and defense issues. Tax Policy. Jules Gordon Kaplan is a senior instructor of economics who specializes in regulation and banking. He has worked for the Colorado governor's office estimating revenues and the fiscal impact of tax policy as well as for the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C. Western Issues and the New Administration. Patty Limerick, professor of history and environmental studies, and director of the Center of the American West, can discuss changes in the handling of Western issues coming from the new Obama administration and Congress, including the new secretary of the interior. Science Policy/Climate Policy. Roger A. Pielke, Jr. is a professor in the Environmental Studies Program and a fellow of the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences. His research focuses on the intersection of science and technology and decision-making. In 2006, Pielke received the Eduard Brückner Prize in Munich, Germany, for outstanding achievement in interdisciplinary climate research. His book "The Honest Broker: Making Sense of Science in Policy and Politics" was published by Cambridge University Press in 2007. He has a new book coming out this year with Roberta Klein, "Presidential Science Advisors: Perspectives and Reflections on Science Policy and Politics." Climate Change. James White is a professor of geological sciences and environmental studies, and a fellow and director of CU's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. He specializes in two research areas that involve humans and the environment: global-scale climate and environmental dynamics, and the carbon cycle and the fate of anthropogenic and natural greenhouse gases. He works mainly with ice cores from Greenland and Antarctica, as well air samples from around the world. Energy Technology. Carl Koval is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry and the faculty director of the CU Energy Initiative. Most of Koval's research throughout his scientific career has been related to renewable or sustainable energy. He has played several key roles in the development of the Colorado Renewable Energy Collaboratory, including serving as Institutional Coordinator for the Boulder campus and on the project management team for the Center for Revolutionary Solar Photoconversion. Natural Resources and Environmental Law. Mark Squillace, director of the Natural Resources Law Center at the CU School of Law, can discuss issues relating to mining, oil and gas development, public lands, water resources, air and water pollution, land conservation, wildlife conservation and territorial affairs associated with the responsibilities of the U.S. Department of the Interior.
