Meeting and working to Pacific Southwest Research Station goes to Biobased Cutlery  - cutlery used in USDA HQs cafeteria USDA is charged by law with implementing the Federal BioPreferredSM program designed to encourage the purchase and use of biobased products by Federal agencies and to also set an example for the rest of the Federal government.  One of the ways USDA is leading by example is in removing single use petroleum-based food service products (plates, bowls, trays, cups, cutlery, etc) from our Washington, DC area cafeterias and replacing these items with food service products made from renewable agricultural materials which can be composted and returned friendly to the earth. USDA's Green Roof - Green roofs reduce storm water run-off (up to 90%), improve water quality of streams, Environmental Management - Among the 30 miles of streams at BARC a section of the Upper Beaver Dam Creek was selected by the Maryland Department of the Environment as a reference Coastal Plain stream for the development of Maryland’s Anacostia Total Maximum Daily Load. Recently, in collaboration with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Bus powered by biodiesel - In 2001, DESC became a biodiesel supplier for civilian federal fleets. Other agencies now use that supply contract when converting to biodiesel. BARC now uses about 66,000 gallons of B20 annually in its diesel fleet as well as in backup building generators. prairie
BioPreferred products - BARC was the first federal facility to require the janitorial contractor to use BioPreferred products. This arrangement has been utilized by the Department and other agencies.
USDA has made many forward strides in our BioPreferredSM program - products have been composted and returned as nutrients to the soil.
