Winter BikingWinter biking

Minnesota is second in the nation for the number of people biking to work.

Commuting by bike gets harder in the winter, but it’s not impossible. Here are some of the basics for making cold-weather riding more enjoyable.

  • Keep the bike tuned up and clean. Salt and water can eat away at intricate components
  • Ask your bike shop for tire recommendations
  • Install inexpensive fenders to stay clean and dry
  • Layer with warm, wicking clothing. Experiment on the weekend to gauge what you need. Biking generates a lot of heat, so it’s easy to overdo it.
  • Start slowly and use buses to shorten the ride.
  • Because the daylight hours are shortened, make sure to carry a headlight and flashing tail light
  • To learn more about biking look for classes advertised at co-ops and bike shops.
