Center for Social Media Releases Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video

Building on the tremendous success they have achieved with the Documentary Filmmakers' Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use, the Center for Social Media today released another valuable tool for content creators -- the Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for Online Video

The ability to easily create and share online video presents unprecedented opportunities for self-expression, but has at the same time generated significant confusion about what is permissible versus impermissible copying. As part of the panel that helped shape this Code of Best Practices, I hope it creates a growing consensus about how to balance the rights of copyright holders and the rights of those who would use content for new, valuable, and expressive purposes.

Muni Wifi in SF helps Low Income Residents get Wired

by Lauren Gelman, posted on April 4, 2007 - 9:16am.

Wired News has a nice article about how Muni Wifi is helping low income residents in San Francisco get wired:

Last month, volunteers turned on a novel broadband network in this 135-unit block, throwing a digital lifeline to Emma Casey and other tenants. Using a refurbished PC she picked up for $100, the 47-year-old mother of two adult children is now going online to help her son find a job, get health information and, she says, pay tribute to neighbors who've met with violent or untimely deaths.

Model Muni-Wifi Policy

CIS Student Fellows Travis Brandon, Thomas Nosewicz, Jon Novotny, Elspeth J. Simpson, and Sarah Tierney drfted this model Privacy Policy for the Silicon Valley Municipal Wireless Network (SVW). We think it carefully balances the interests of law enforcement and commercial success with the need to protect users' privacy when they use the network.

We worked with students at UC Santa Clara who drafted a model T&C for SVW that addresses the same privacy interests in slightly different ways.
