AALL - Support the Profession that Supports You

Updated: 9/8/08
Contact: Executive Director - Kate Hagan

The American Association of Law Libraries (AALL) offers numerous opportunities for individuals to enhance the profession of law librarianship. These contributions can support:

AALL Grants

The Grants Program financially assists librarians who hold promise of future involvement in the law library profession. Grants may be used to support attendance at any Association-sponsored educational activity, including the Annual Meeting, institutes and workshops.

AALL Scholarships

Scholarships enable AALL members to continue their law and library education. Five types of scholarships are awarded in June of each year to candidates in the following categories:

Type I: Library Degree for Law School Graduates
Type II: Library School Graduates Attending Law School
Type III: Library Degree for Non-Law School Graduates
Type IV: Library School Graduates Seeking a Non-Law Degree
Type V: Law Librarians in Continuing Education Courses

Centennial Fund (formerly Memorial Fund)

Established to honor and remember deceased AALL members, law librarians, and others. The names of those remembered are noted annually in Association publications. Contributions are held in a restricted fund that can be used for programs or other activities deemed appropriate by the AALL Board. The fund was established in 1994 from contributions made in memory of Antonette "Babe" Russo, who served as Administrative Secretary of AALL from 1969 to 1989.

Foreign, Comparative & International Law (FCIL-SIS) Schaffer Grant for Foreign Law Librarians

The purpose of the FCIL Schaffer Foreign Librarian's Grant ("Schaffer Grant") is to provide financial assistance to ensure the presence and participation of foreign librarians at the AALL Annual Meeting. Foreign attendees enrich AALL events by sharing global perspectives to the benefit of all participants.

George A. Strait Minority Scholarship Endowment funded by AALL & Thomson West

Awarded to college graduates with law library experience who are members of a minority group and are degree candidates in accredited library or law schools. Preference is given to individuals with previous service to, or interest in, law librarianship.

Government Affairs

Established to advance the Mission of the Association and support the work of the Government Affairs Committee and the Washington Affairs Representative. Funds may be used to support testimony, prepare public policy statements, cover legal expenses, prepare legal briefs, and support coalitions or other efforts of library and law-related associations.

James F. Connolly LexisNexis® Academic and Library Solutions Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to a law librarian who is interested in pursuing a law degree, and preference is given to a librarian who has demonstrated an interest in government publications.

LexisNexis®/John R. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Endowment

LexisNexis® funded the first AALL-endowed scholarship in honor of John Johnson who was the Director of the Legal Librarian segment of LIS at Mead Data Central and a long-time law library supporter. Candidates who qualify for Types I-IV are eligible for this award.

Marla Schwartz Grant, funded by the Technical Services Special Interest Section

To honor the memory and professional achievements of Marla Schwartz, grants will be given to applicants who either are in library graduate school or are new to law librarianship. The grants will enable them to participate in the work of AALL and begin to build professional networks by supporting their attendance at the annual meeting or an AALL-sponsored conference or workshop.

Research Endowment established by LexisNexis®

The purpose of the AALL Research Fund is to conduct investigations that have practical impact on the improvement of law libraries and their services, the job performance and professional development of law librarians, and the contribution of law libraries to the legal profession.

Robert L. Oakley Memorial Scholarship Fund

Bob Oakley was a national leader in his field, and his service to AALL and the profession is well known. Oakley served on the Executive Board and was elected as AALL president in 2000-2001. He was instrumental in establishing AALL’s government relations program. For 18 years he served as Washington affairs representative, AALL’s advocate on Capitol Hill. He was an expert on copyright law and wrote and lectured on the subject. He was a leader in protecting fair use for America’s library users through his participation in copyright meetings around the world. In his honor a scholarship fund has been established through the ALA Foundation. Donations can be made online at http://www.ala.org/giveala.
