EPA Educates Students about Estuaries

Please join students and other viewers in an exploration of Estuaries by watching Estuarylive, a real-time interactive field trip to different estuaries via the internet on Friday, Sept. 29th. This broadcast helps to educate people across the country about the importance of protecting America’s estuaries, “where rivers meet the sea.” Hosted by EPA’s National Estuary Programs (NEP) and NOAA’s National Estuarine Research Reserves (NERR), four estuaries will be featured during the broadcast scheduled on Friday, September 29. Included are Peconic Nationals Estuary Program, New York; New Jersey Harbor NEP, NJ; South Slough NERR and Tillamook Bay National Estuary; and Padilla Bay NERR, Washington State.

Classrooms across the country will tour these estuaries by asking questions of trained naturalists and educators leading the expeditions. For more information on each field trip and associated activities, and to find out how to participate, visit http://www.estuaries.gov/ Exit EPA Disclaimer and click on EstuaryLive. Updated Advice for Emergency Disinfection of Drinking Water

EPA has updated and improved its advice for how to disinfect drinking water in situations where tap water may be unsafe to drink due to an emergency. The updated version of "Emergency Disinfection of Drinking Water," includes metric measurements and line drawings that clearly illustrate different disinfection methods. "Emergency Disinfection" also highlights four crucial steps to take when the water supply may be contaminated. Agreement on these steps is the result of collaboration between EPA, other U.S. federal agencies and the Red Cross. EPA is also making translations of the publication available in French, Spanish, Vietnamese and Standard Arabic translations in PDF versions on the Safewater website: http://epa.gov/safewater/faq/emerg.html.

Two New Drinking Water Treatment Waste Disposal Guides are Now Available for Owners and Operators of Drinking Water Systems

A System’s Guide to the Management of Radioactive Residuals from Drinking Water Treatment Technologies was developed to provide owners and operators of drinking water systems with information on waste disposal options for radioactive residuals. This guide provides information on the available treatment technologies for the removal of radium, uranium, and gross alpha particle activity; the residuals produced by each technology; disposal options; and the regulations governing these options. More information about this guide can be found on EPA’s Web site: www.epa.gov/safewater/radionuclides/compliancehelp.html. A System’s Guide to the Identification and Disposal of Hazardous and Non-Hazardous Water Treatment Plant Residuals provides information for drinking water systems on the federal requirements for identifying, storing, and disposing of hazardous and non-hazardous water treatment plant wastes, such as arsenic. More information about this guide can be found on EPA’s Web site: www.epa.gov/safewater/arsenic/compliance.html#tools.
