Abandoned Mines Report and Roundtable

At a news conference on January 11, the University of Colorado at Boulder’s Center of the American West released its report, "Cleaning Up Abandoned Hardrock Mines in the West, Prospecting for a Better Future." This event included participants from EPA and other organizations interested in abandoned mine issues. On January 12 and 13 the Western Governors’ Association hosted a roundtable discussion on the challenges facing Good Samaritan cleanup of abandoned mines. As part of the Good Samaritan Initiative, EPA continues to foster greater collaboration and develop tools to accelerate the restoration of watersheds and fisheries threatened by abandoned mine runoff. NDWAC Work Group to Meet on Public Education for the Lead and Copper Rule

The National Drinking Water Advisory Council’s (NDWAC) Working Group will hold its third meeting on Public Education on February 1 and 2 in Washington, D.C. EPA has asked the Council to provide comments and recommendations on the Lead and Copper Rule’s public education requirements to help ensure that those at risk receive information to help reduce exposure from lead in drinking water. This meeting will take place at Resolve, Inc., 1255 23rd St., NW, Suite 275, Washington D.C., from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on February 1 and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on February 2. Source Water Protection: A Webcast Series

A series of interactive Webcasts designed to allow owners and operators of drinking water utilities to share experiences with source water protection will be released soon. The first Webcast, "Source Water Protection: Monitoring and Data Sharing," will air January 25, 2006, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Eastern Time. This Webcast will address issues including real-time reporting, water monitoring, emerging contaminants, source water protection plans and data sharing. Webcasts on land development and growth and collaborative communication and regulatory and non-regulatory tools will air on February 22 and March 22, 2006, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Eastern Time.

Registration must be made in advance to participate in the Webcasts. Participants will need a telephone and a computer with an Internet connection. This Web site also contains links to information about speakers and specific presentation topics. Recorded Webcasts will be available for public viewing after the initial broadcast. Workshop on Airline Drinking Water Regulations

The Office of Water will host a workshop to discuss aircraft drinking water issues on January 18 and 19. Topics of the workshop include an overview of aircraft water systems and watering points, existing drinking water regulations for aircraft water systems and the scope of issues for proposing regulations tailored to aircraft water systems. Preliminary options for a proposed rulemaking will also be presented at this workshop. This is the first workshop in a series designed to gain perspectives from representatives from industry, government, public interest groups, and the general public. The Office of Water, the Food and Drug Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration are working together in the planning of the workshop. The workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Eastern Time, on January 18 and 19 at the Hotel Washington, 515 15th Street, NW, Washington, DC 20004.
