Goal:

Promote Healthy Eating and Active Lifestyles

Collaborate across FNS Programs and with community groups to communicate consistent nutrition messages through multiple channels in order to reduce the risk of overweight and obesity.

Objective 1:

By September 30, 2007, begin implementing the master plan for the Wisconsin Nutrition Education Network's Learner Centered Education Project, 2007 - 1010.

Accomplishment:

  • Regular WHEN meetings were conducted.

  • WNEN developed and presented a poster at FNS's "Raising the Bar: Successful Collaborations Across Programs" meeting in Chicago, July 27, 2007, in Chicago. The poster was entitled "Engage Learners and Change Behavior Using Learner Centered Approaches to Nutrition Education."

  • WNEP conducted Facilitated Dialogue Training in every Extension district. Partners were invited.

  • WNEP pilot-tested the "Vary Your Veggies" curriculum (adapted from the Iowa WIC curriculum on the 2005 Dietary Guidelines and MyPyramid) in four counties (Waukesha, Portage, Winnebago, and Burnett). Revisions were made based on feedback and input from UWEX Family Living specialists and a second pilot was conducted in summer, 2007. The final product will be released to the rest of the state at the end of 2007 or early in 2008.

FNS Programs Involved:

  • FSP-FSNE
  • WIC

Month/Year Completed: August 2007

Objective 2:

By September 30, 2007, formalize and continue the work of the Wisconsin Food Security Consortium that would provide consistent messages access to nutritious and affordable food to prevent food insecurity and obesity.

Accomplishment:

  • The Wisconsin Food Security Consortium (FSC) continued to meet regularly, co-chaired by Patti Herrick (DFHS) and Kadi Row (UW Extension). The FSC was purposeful and successful in establishing a greater involvement from the Food Stamp Program and the Department of Public Instruction's school meals.

  • A Steering Committee was formed of members from the FSC that met more frequently and carried out the work of the Consortium and By-Laws were approved.

  • The FSC Steering Committee planned a successful Statewide Hunger Summit attended by nearly 200. The agenda included national speakers Patti Whitney-Wise from the Oregon Hunger Task Force and Lynn Parker from FRAC; two state legislators; partners and stakeholders from local pantries and agencies, and state level program managers. All attended to learn about food insecurity and offered insight and suggestions toward the development of a statewide hunger plan.
