NATIONAL SHORELINE MANAGEMENT STUDY

Skyline

The Corps of Engineers has initiated the National Shoreline Management Study authorized in the Water Resources Development Act of 1999 under Section 215c.

Ongoing work on the National Shoreline Management Study presents an opportunity to examine the status of the Nation's shoreline in order to provide a basis for Federal actions regarding shoreline management for the foreseeable future. The 2004 study provided analytical information and a technical basis useful in developing recommendations regarding shoreline management, including a systems approach to sand management and roles for Federal and non-Federal participation in shoreline management.

The assessment of the nation's shorelines takes into account the regional diversity of geology, geomorphology, oceanography, ecology, commerce, and development patterns. Efforts under the study are undertaken through collaborative efforts with other agencies, resulting in information and products developed and reviewed by national technical and policy committees.

The U.S. Army Engineer Institute for Water Resources (IWR) manages the study, working closely with the Engineer Research and Development Center's (ERDC) Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory (CHL) and Environmental Laboratory.

The 2004 study:

  • summarized information about shoreline changes (erosion and accretion) using existing data sources;
  • examined causes of shoreline erosion and accretion and economic and environmental effects;
  • identified and described Federal, state and local government shore restoration and nourishment programs and resources; and
  • explored a systems approach to sand management.

Ongoing work under the study continue these efforts.
