Background: The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources was funded as an enhanced research project from 2003-2008. In 2008, West Virginia became a standard project.

Lifestyle Intervention:  West Virginia developed Cookin’ Up Health, a culturally and individually tailored computer-based interactive nutrition program, and a tailored print-based health communications program to reinforce nutrition behavior and offer staged-based education for physical activity. Six print-based health messages will be mailed to participants throughout the year to help women adopt and maintain behavior change.

Screening: Risk factor screening includes blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and other lipids testing as well as assessing weight, medical history, tobacco use, poor diet, and physical inactivity.

Sites: 35 primary care centers and local health departments, serving 22 counties.

Key Partner: West Virginia University.
