Goal:  

Promote Fruit and Vegetable Consumption

Promote consumption of fruits and vegetables through partnerships and collaborative interventions between the nutrition assistance programs and other related groups.

Objective 1:

Increase Fruit and Vegetable Consumption in Kentucky from 3.5 servings to 5 servings by 2006.

Tactics:

  • Coordinating with 5 A Day month (September), distribute to over 4,000 retailers contracted with the Food Stamp Program and the WIC Program - 5 A Day posters.

Lead Program and Staff: Food Stamp Program Staff and Nutrition Services Branch Staff (WIC and Nutrition)

Completion Date: December 2004

Tactics:

  • Distribute to over 500 sites - all local health departments and sites, all Food Stamp Offices, Cooperative Extension Offices, Food Banks, Bluegrass Regional Child and Adult Care Program and Commodity Supplemental Food Program sites - 5 A day posters.

Tactics:

  • Distribute to over 2000 sites - summer feeding sites, Senior Citizen Centers, juvenile justice centers and state prisons - 5 A day posters.

Tactics:

  • Pilot with the Nutritious Nibbles with the Bluegrass Regional Child and Adult Care Feeding Program (CACFP) which serves 200 sites.

Tactics:

  • Provide teaching packets for 900 Summer Feeding Program Sponsors including information on 5 A Day and Physical Activity.

Tactics:

  • Provided education to 43 after school or summer feeding programs on increasing fruits and vegetables by one serving, selecting water as a drink and increasing physical activity.

  • Provide Literacy, Eating and Activity for Preschool (LEAP) training to the homemakers, program assistants and county extension agents. LEAP will be used with preschoolers throughout the state.

  • Local Health Departments developed community program plans to include 5 A Day.

Tactics:

  • Trained 45 local health departments on the 5 A Day challenge.

Tactics:

  • Developed 5 Displays with the Kentucky Cancer Association to be used at various activities such as Health Fairs, school programs, etc.

  • Provide displays, TV videos and 20,000 nutrition cards for the Farmers' Markets in 43 counties.

Tactics:

  • Spanish speaking program assistants do quarterly radio interviews concerning nutrition education in Central Kentucky.

  • Cooking demonstrations on vegetables are available for Farmers' Markets and Commodity Supplemental Feeding Program. 

  • Training county extension agents and program assistants on "Grow Your Own Groceries".
