.: About Us

Welcome to the Smithsonian Libraries! We are the most comprehensive museum library system in the world, supporting the vital research of the Institution as well as the work of scientists and scholars near and far. Consisting of 20 branch libraries in Washington, D.C., Panama and New York, our collections are as diverse as the patrons we serve, with particular strengths in art and design, history and culture and natural and physical sciences. Our collection of 1.5 million printed books and manuscripts continues to grow, as does our digital content and electronic resources. We hope you enjoy connecting with SIL’s services and collections through our newly redesigned website.
