Demos/Grant Projects

Elderly Nutrition Pilot Project: The Food and Nutrition Service awarded grants totaling $2.4 million to six State food stamp agencies to conduct elderly nutrition pilots from 2002 to 2004. The purpose of these pilots is to test three different approaches to eliminate barriers to participation in the Food Stamp Program by eligible persons age 60 years and older. Successful projects increased the number of participating seniors by 20 to 35 percent in less than 2 years. An evaluation of the demonstration is available here.

School Breakfast Pilot Project: This congressionally-mandated 3-year pilot , which began in school year 2000-2001 in six school districts, is studying the impact of the availability of universal-free school breakfast on breakfast participation and measures related to elementary school students' nutritional status and academic performance.

WIC Special Project Grants: FNS awards WIC Special Project Grants to be used for "special State projects of regional or national significance to improve the services of the program." In order to meet the statutory objectives, Special Projects need to address issues of critical and timely importance to the WIC program.
