Kristen Hileman's Pick: John Baldessari

Cremation Project, Corpus Wafers (With Text, Recipe and Documentation)

For this work, the artist destroyed many of his early paintings by cremating them. He published an affidavit to document the cremation and then used the ashes to make cookies, which remain preserved, crumbling in a humble glass jar. The piece questions what is more important and enduring in art—the objects produced by the artist, the ideas of an artist, or the documentation and residue of the process of executing ideas. Ultimately, all three components are essential ingredients to this particular work.
