  • Open mid-May to late-October
  • Northwest Forest Pass required per vehicle ($5)

Located on Forest Road 83 at milepost 11, Lahar Viewpoint overlooks an area scoured by a 1980 mudflow. Observe the notch in Mount St. Helens that holds the remnants of Shoestring Glacier. Part of this glacier collapsed northward. Most of the remaining glacier rapidly melted and created a slurry of rock, ash, and pumice that swept everything in its path down the southern flanks of the mountain into the Muddy River and Pine Creek.
