The Nevada Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a federally funded short-term nutrition program operated in Nevada through the Nevada State Health Division, Bureau of Family Health Services. It provides nutritious foods to supplement the diets of pregnant, postpartum and breastfeeding women, infants and children under age 5 who meet WIC eligibility requirements.

The Program works with health professionals to provide participants with:

      • Food Instruments for supplemental foods at no cost
      • Nutrition and breastfeeding education
      • Information on immunizations, prenatal care, and family planning
      • Information about other family support services available in their community
It is this combination of education, supplemental foods, and referrals to health care providers which allows WIC to make a difference. The WIC Program staff works with health and social services professionals to ensure the best health care possible.

Participation in the WIC Program also leads to:

      • Increased likelihood of obtaining prenatal and regular health care
      • Reduced incidence of low birth weight and premature births
      • Reduced incidence of anemia
      • Improved diets
      • Improved immunization rates
      • Improved learning in school
      • Better cognitive performance
      • Better digit memory test scores

For over 20 years, WIC has been achieving its goal of providing short-term intervention and influencing lifetime nutrition and health behaviors.
