Volunteer

TSA Volunteers play a pivotal role in the continued success of The Smithsonian Associates Program by providing invaluable service in a variety of ways. TSA staff members rely on the support of both Office Volunteers and Event Monitor Volunteers in all aspects of program and administrative activity.

No particular credential or work experience is required to become an office volunteer. However, it is highly desirable that applicants have an interest in TSA's mission as well as a willingness to work with staff, TSA members, and other volunteers.

Prospective volunteers are requested to complete an application form that includes short written paragraphs. Upon TSA's receipt of the application form, you will be contacted to schedule an interview, provided that volunteer assignments are available.

OFFICE VOLUNTEERS

Office VolunteerOffice Volunteers at The Smithsonian Associates provide critical support in various departments within the office and enjoy an "insider's" perspective. Volunteers that staff the reception desk in the TSA office are often the only representative from the organization with whom Associates members or prospective members have contact.

Projects available for office volunteer assignments include:

  • fielding program inquiries from members and the general public
  • assisting in public information and marketing mailings
  • supporting program development
  • helping to maintain TSA's Web site
  • working on special projects based on experience and interests
  • providing support for TSA's audio cassette program

Participation in the Volunteer Program involves a commitment of time and interest. Office volunteers must commit to serving at least one four-hour shift per week for a minimum of one year. In order to volunteer in the TSA office, you must have daytime availability during the week.

Benefits and privileges that Office Volunteers enjoy are:

  • An SI Photo ID (which identifies volunteers as non-paid staff and may be used to obtain discounts at museums and cultural institutions)
  • Discounts in Smithsonian Museum shops
  • Working within a supportive and welcoming environment

EVENT MONITORS

TSA event monitors contribute to the successful undertaking of each TSA event and represent TSA and the Smithsonian Institution to the public. Monitors typically help with the following: selling tickets at the door; directing the audience to ticket sales area; tallying attendance; distributing handouts; promoting TSA Membership; and assisting staff with other duties as assigned.

Event Monitor Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, although training sessions are held only once a year (typically in the summer). Interviews with Volunteer Office staff are required after completed applications are received and prior to training. Interviews serve to outline Volunteer Program requirements and procedural information.

The TSA Event Monitor program is both dynamic and versatile, as well as educationally enriching. Successful Event Monitors possess the ability to work well with others, have a flexible and congenial personality, and share a strong belief in the mission of The Smithsonian Associates.
