Pharmacy College to Offer Health Screenings at OMSI

PORTLAND, Ore. – Visitors to the Body Worlds exhibit at the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry from Sept. 27 to Oct. 3 can also get free health screenings and learn more about the research and educational programs offered by the College of Pharmacy at Oregon State University.

As well as sponsoring this highly popular exhibit for the week, the college will offer:

• Full lipid profiles, including cholesterol and triglyceride information;

• Blood glucose tests, important for diabetes monitoring;

• Blood pressure checks;

• Individualized counseling with a pharmacist about test results and cardiovascular risks;

• Nutrition screening and counseling, including body composition analysis.

Faculty and students from both the OSU campus in Corvallis and the OHSU campus in Portland will be involved in these programs. In addition, posters and information will be available about drug discovery and development research at the college; infectious disease studies with an animated model of flu transmission; and a video about automated drug dispensing.

The role of pharmacists in the medical profession has changed greatly in recent years, officials say, with expanded work in research, patient education, new drug development, collaboration with physicians, community outreach and other programs. OSU operates Oregon’s only accredited program in pharmacy education, in close cooperation with the Oregon Health & Science University.

About the OSU College of Pharmacy: The College of Pharmacy prepares students of today to be the pharmacy practitioners and pharmaceutical sciences researchers of tomorrow by contributing to improved health, advancing patient care and the discovery and understanding of medicines.
