Acclaimed Native American Writer to Speak at OSU

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Award-winning author Linda Hogan, whose books, poetry and plays often focus Native America subjects, will speak at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 23, in Gilfillan Hall at Oregon State University.

Her lecture is part of the Native American Philosophies class and lectures, a series of Wednesday evening events that bring distinguished Native American writers, performers and political leaders to OSU.

Hogan, herself a member of the Chickasaw tribe, is a poet, short story writer, novelist, playwright and essayist. She has played a prominent role in the development of contemporary Native American poetry, particularly in its relationship to environmental and anti-nuclear issues. Hogan has taught at the University of Minnesota and has been an associate professor at the University of Colorado in Boulder since 1989.

Hogan received a 2002 Wordcraft Circle Writer of the Year Creative Prose award for her book, “The Woman Who Watches Over The World: A Native Memoir.” In July 1998, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Native Writers' Circle of the Americas. Linda received the American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation in 1986 for her novel, “Seeing Through the Sun.”

The lecture is free and open to the public.
