OSU Hosting Community College Leadership Workshops

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University, in cooperation with the 17 community colleges in Oregon, has developed a series of quarterly workshops on community college leadership.

The first workshop is Feb. 2-3 at Silver Falls Conference Center at Silver Falls State Park east of Salem. It will run from 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 2, to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3. Francisco Rodriguez, president of Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, will be the lead instructor and facilitator.

“There is a growing need and demand for the professional development of emerging leaders in community colleges,” said Rich Shintaku, chair of the Department of Adult Education and Higher Education Leadership in OSU’s College of Education.

Shintaku said two of the four workshops each year will focus on general skill and leadership development for emerging leaders with the other two more focused on topics such as multicultural competency for community college leaders, effective strategic planning, budgeting and finance, technology issues and leadership for innovation.

“As there will be distinct differences to the workshops, individuals can participate more than one per year,” he said. “It is our intent to create a professional network for community college leaders in the region.”

The workshops will be held in tandem with scheduled weekend class meetings of the Oregon State University Community College Leadership Program doctoral program. Workshop participants will be able to participate in the “Friday Night Fireside Chat” along with OSU faculty and about 30 community college leaders from western states, Shintaku said.

The second workshop will be held April 13-14 on the OSU campus in conjunction with the annual Charles Carpenter lecture.
