The Social Sciences Team of the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) develops and supports this website. The site provides conservation professionals with:

  • direct access to standard social and economic data sets from multiple sources

  • basic training materials on using social and economic data to more effectively provide conservation to landowners.

The site brings together a combination of over 200 county level variables from the U.S. 2000 General Population Census, the 2002 U.S. Agricultural Census, and special Agricultural Census information provided by the National Agricultural Statistical Service. All data sets are geo referenced using Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) codes so that the conservation professional may use them in a wide variety of mapping software.

This web site contains several sets of social/economic data. They include (or will include) the following:

  • County Level Data: The County Level Data Sets  include over 200 variables from the 2000 General Population Census , the 2002 Census of Agriculture, and several special National Agricultural Statistical Service data runs done specifically for the Natural Resources Conservation Service.
  • Limited Resource Farmer and Beginning Farmer Data: The Limited Resource and Beginning Farmer Data Set includes information helpful for analysis of the base population of Limited Resource Farmers and Beginning Farmers at the county level.
  • County Level Historical Data: The County Level Historical Data Set will include a small set of agricultural statistical information and general population information covering the last 30 years. It is expected to be available by June of 2003.
  • Special Data Sets: Any customized data set created for headquarters, regional, state, or field level offices in NRCS will be available from this page. These will be added as they are created.
  • Social Profile Data Sets These data sets were created for use in Earth Team Coordinator Training Courses. They may be used by state and county employees to gain an understanding of the cultural, social, and economic variety within their area. Each data set is contained in an Excel spreadsheet and the information is derived from the the 2000 General Population Census. The data includes Race, ethnicity (hispanic/non-hispanic), gender, potential volunteer population, and primary language..

The Natural Resources Conservation Service provides leadership in a partnership effort to help people conserve, maintain, and improve our natural resources and environment.
