Image Rights

Image Rights and Reproductions

Formats
The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden Photography Lab offers photographic materials in a variety of formats, including 4 x 5 color transparencies, color and black-and-white photographs, color slides and digital images. Color transparencies are loaned for a six-month period. Slides are provided for personal or scholarly use only; reproductions are not permitted from this medium. All works must be presented in their entirety without alteration, including cropping, overprinting or bleeding.

Image Requests
Written requests to reproduce an image for publication should include title, author, publisher, publication date, print run, and languages in which the book will appear. Requests should provide as much detailed information as possible and be specific concerning the image you are seeking. New photography may be ordered for an additional fee if necessary.

Payment
An invoice will be provided outlining the fees due upon the processing of each request. We accept payment in U.S. dollars by money order, a check drawn from a U.S. or international bank made payable to "Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden" or via wire transfer. Fees are non-refundable.

Usage
Upon payment of the usage fee, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden grants approval only to the extent of its rights relating to the request. Certain works of art, as well as photographs of those works, may be protected by copyright, trademark, or related interests not owned by the Institution. The responsibility for ascertaining any other necessary permission remains with the applicant. Permission can only be granted for the use of color transparencies, black-and-white prints, and digital files obtained from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
