Central Mississippi;

home to the capital city of Jackson

254,606 (Jackson had a population of 196,637); from 1980 to 1990 the white population decreased by 10.6%, while the non-white population increased by 14.4%. White population in neighboring Madison Co increased 63.2% during this same time period. Hinds County was 51% African American and 48% white.

Jackson was about 56% African American and 44% white.

Humphreys Co

MS

Heart of Mississippi Delta 12,134 68% African American and 32%
Richland Co

SC

Central South Carolina; home to the capital city of Columbia 285,720 (Columbia had a population of 98,052) 56% white and 42% African American; Hispanics and Asians about 1%
Orangeburg Co

SC

Located between Columbia and Charleston in a largely rural area 84,803 (City of Orangeburg, the county seat, had a population of 13,739) 58% African American and 41% white with the African-American portion of the population increasing slightly (from 56%) since the 1980 census.
Shelby Co

TN

Southwestern corner of Tennessee, bordered by Mississippi River to the west and the Mississippi State border to the south; home of Memphis 826,333 (Memphis had a population of 610,337) 55% white and 43% African American (Memphis was 55% African American and 44% white)
Tunica Co

MS

35 miles south of Memphis along the Mississippi River 8,146 (2,000 of whom lived in Tunica, the only incorporated municipality) 75% African American and 24% white
Montgomery Co

AL

Central Alabama; home to the capital city of Montgomery 214,996 (Montgomery had a population of 187,106) 57% white and 42% African American (Montgomery was 53% white, 46% African American)
Lowndes Co

AL

30 minutes west of Montgomery 12,658 76% African American and 23.5% white (underreporting may have underestimated African-American population)
