FOCUS ON THE FIELD

PMC, Partners Put Dust Control "On the Road" - NRCS' Plant Materials Center (PMC) in Lockeford, California, with a host of local partners, held a special event that gave more than 200 visitors a unique look at the how-to's of dust control. Local suppliers of dust suppression products were invited to treat the PMC's roads with their wares and offer visitors opportunities to see a variety of dust control methods in action. Suppliers also sponsored booths that featured information about their products. NRCS showed the dust-control properties of wheat, oat, and rice straw, Sudan grass, and pistachio nutshells. Joining NRCS in holding the event were the San Joaquin Resource Conservation District, USDA Extension, Lodi/Woodbridge Wine Grape Commission, and San Joaquin County Valley Air Pollution Control District. The project was partially funded through an Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) grant. For more information, please contact: Tish Espinosa, NRCS Plant Resources Specialist/Agronomist, on (209) 727-3129.

Earth Team Teens from New Orleans Stabilize Levee - Twelve teenage Earth Team volunteers from New Orleans recently traveled to the town of Cut Off, Louisiana, to stabilize the banks of a hurricane protection levee. Through a program called "Making Good in the 'Hood," they turned their talents to helping the Lafourche-Terrebonne Soil and Water Conservation District plant 3,000 containers of giant cutgrass on a 15,000-foot area of the Clovelly Levee. Project organizers were NRCS Louisiana, Bayou Land Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council, Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, South Lafourche Levee District, Belle Terre Erosion Control Company, and Louisiana Service Commission of the Lieutenant Governor's Office. For more information, please contact: Holly Martien, NRCS Administrative Program Specialist, on (318) 473-7753.

NRCS South Dakota, Partners Bring Water System to Rural County - NRCS South Dakota and the Fall River Conservation District report that the Fall River Water Users District received approval for a $5.2 million rural water system. The system will serve 460,000 acres and consist of nearly 200 miles of distribution pipelines with supply tanks. It could serve as many as 200 rural families and 2 small rural communities. Funding comes from NRCS' PL-566 program, USDA Rural Development, the State of South Dakota, and local sources. The district is an EQIP priority area. More than $650,000 has been obligated for long-term EQIP contracts that feature water quality and quantity, and grazing distribution and systems. For more information, please contact: Ronald K. Siers, NRCS District Conservationist, on: ronald.siers@sd.nrcs.usda.gov

Alaska Soil Scientists Lay Groundwork for Conservation Planning - Thanks to a recently completed soil survey, reindeer herd management, community landfills, village residential expansion, and small harbor development are underway on Pribilof Island of St. Paul in the Bering Sea. Working with NRCS Alaska on the survey were the Native Aleut Corporation, Tanadgusix Corporation, the City of St. Paul, Alaska Soil and Water Conservation District, University of Alaska Fairbanks, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, National Marine Fisheries Service, and the U.S. Coast Guard. The Native American Lands Special Initiative funded the survey. For more information, please contact: Jeanette Colville, NRCS Public Affairs Specialist, on (907) 271-2424.

Students Receive NRCS Soil Science Scholarships - Two students from Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College, a land grant institution in Cloquet, Minnesota, recently received NRCS Soil Science Scholarships. The two $25,000 scholarships are the largest in the college's history. After completing 2 years of study at the college, they will transfer to the University of Minnesota's School of Agriculture to pursue 4-year degrees in soil science and environmental studies. Scholarships provide full tuition, room and board, and periodic employment with pay, and duties commensurate with a student's course of study. For more information, please contact: Sylvia Rainford, NRCS Public Affairs Specialist, on (651) 602-7859.
