The training of future generations of tropical biologists has been identified as a priority among the goals for scientific excellence in STRI's strategic plan.
The objectives of research training programs are:
- Make STRI’s learning resources –professional staff, libraries, laboratories and field stations—available to the academic community.
- Foster intellectual exchanges between Smithsonian staff and external scholars and students.
Fellowships are the primary goal of scientific training at STRI, but other strategies include internships, field courses, seminars and workshops. These are used not only for young scientists, but also for professionals.
There are a number of training opportunities available for pre-graduate, graduate and postgraduate students through Institution-wide fellowship programs at the Smithsonian Institution as well as at STRI.
