San Francisco, CA -- Less than a week remains to register for disaster assistance, according to state and federal officials working on the Big Island flood recovery. A reminder on the January 8 deadline was issued today by State Civil Defense and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

"If they have not already called to register, we encourage individuals and businesses impacted by the disaster to do so, while there's still time," said state coordinating officer Ed Teixeira.

Disaster victims may still register for various types of local, state and federal help by calling FEMA, toll-free, 1-800-462-9029 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those with hearing or speech difficulties can call TTY 1-800-462-7585.

The kinds of help available include temporary housing assistance, grants for serious needs and necessary expenses, and low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for damaged residential and business property. Tax, crisis counseling and other services are also available to eligible persons.
