Honolulu, HI -- Big Island residents who sustained losses or damage as a result of the recent severe storms and flooding have only six more days to visit the SCD/FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) in Hilo, federal and state disaster recovery officials announced today.
"The DRC will be close as of 6 p.m. Friday, December 15," Ed Teixeira, state coordinating officer, said. "Even after the center closes, though, FEMA will be as close as a telephone call away," he said.
Disaster victims may still register for assistance by calling toll-free 1-800-462-9029 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Those who are hearing- or speech-impaired can call TTY 1-800-462-7585. "Applicants can call the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-525-0321 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) to find out about assistance programs and the status of their applications," Federal Coordinating Officer William L. Carwile III said.
Disaster assistance programs include temporary housing assistance, grants for serious needs and necessary expenses not covered by insurance or other programs, and low-interest disaster loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for storm- and flood-damaged residential and business property. Disaster unemployment assistance, tax assistance and other special services are also available to eligible persons affected by the disaster.
