Hagatna, Guam -- Checks totaling more than $205,000 in disaster housing grants were approved and in the mail by Tuesday, local/federal disaster officials announced today.

"Meeting housing needs for the victims of Typhoon Chata'an is our top priority, and this is just the beginning," Bill Carwile, federal coordinating officer said. "Many more applications are being processed daily and damage inspections are well underway."

A total of 3,212 applications have been taken in the five days since individual assistance was approved. The two Disaster Recovery Centers that opened on Tuesday have seen a total of 672 people visit with local, federal and volunteer agencies.

The FEMA disaster housing program provides several types of assistance to homeowners or renters whose residences were destroyed or suffered major damage. Rental assistance grants are available to help pay for a place to live until permanent housing can be found or repairs made. Grants for essential repairs not covered by insurance may also be available to make the home livable.

Those who sustained damage to their residence or business because of the devastation of Typhoon Chata'an should apply for disaster assistance by calling FEMA's toll-free number Monday through Saturday at 1-800-621-3362. Hearing- or speech- impaired applicants may call 1-800-462-7585. Hours to call for both numbers are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Guam time.
