SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Californians who suffered damages or losses because of the severe freeze in late December may still call for disaster assistance, according to FEMA and the Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
Beginning Monday, May 17, and until further notice, FEMA's toll-free Teleregistration lines for freeze victims will operate with a new schedule as follows:
1-800-745-0243, or 1-800-462-7585 (TTY), for people with speech or hearing impairments
Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Saturday and Sunday.
Eight counties have been designated as disaster areas: Fresno, Kern, Kings, Madera, Merced, Monterey, Tulare, and Ventura.
People who were affected by the freeze between December 20 and 28, 1998, and who live or work in the named counties, are encouraged to register for help by calling either of the telephone numbers above. More than 5,300 disaster-aid applicants have registered to date.
Disaster Service Centers also remain open in designated counties. Federal and state representatives are available at the centers to answer questions about freeze-related assistance.
