Oakland and San Leandro are Holding a Day-long Block Party to Highlight Emergency Preparedness

San Francisco, Calif. -- The California cities of Oakland and San Leandro, along with local, state and federal agencies and organizations, are holding a day-long block party today (July 14) to highlight emergency preparedness. The event will include demonstrations, children's activities and a barbecue. At the block party the first 20 interested homeowners will receive free mitigation services for their homes, such as installation of smoke detectors, safety latches, and securing water heaters.
Oakland mayor Jerry Brown and San Leandro mayor Sheila Young lead the list of participants at the event, which includes representatives of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
The block party will be from noon until 8 p.m, at the borderline of the Oakland and San Leandro, the intersection of Breed and Durant Streets.
Since disasters recognize no city boundaries, the two partner cities are focusing on local partnerships cooperation, and responsibility - concepts that are the basis of FEMA's Project Impact initiative.
