Purcell Honored by Hepatitis Foundation

Dr. Robert H. Purcell was recently honored with the Scientific Research Achievement Award by the Hepatitis Foundation International for outstanding contributions to the understanding of viral hepatitis. He heads the hepatitis viruses section of NIAID's Laboratory of Infectious Diseases. He has dedicated his research career to the discovery, identification and characterization of various hepatitis viruses such as hepatitis A, D and E, and to the development of diagnostic tests, treatments and preventive measures for hepatitis. Purcell and others were key in the development of the hepatitis A vaccine used worldwide and have also developed a hepatitis E vaccine now in clinical trials.
