Description: The Frank H. McClung Museum, a component of the University of Tennessee, seeks to advance understanding and appreciation of the earth and its peoples through the collection, preservation, study, interpretation, and exhibition of objects and data. Permanent exhibits present the archaeology and the native peoples of Tennessee, ancient Egypt, traditional decorative arts and decorated ethnographic objects, the geology and fossil history of Tennessee, the emergence of humans with a focus on "Lucy" and other early hominid fossils, and the biology and human use of freshwater mussels.
Profile: The Frank H. McClung Museum's exhibit, "Archaeology and the Native Peoples of Tennessee," features two objects from the National Museum of Natural History, Department of Anthropology. The "Bat Creek Stone," was excavated by Smithsonian staff in the 19th century in Loudon County, TN, and a stone figurine was excavated in Roane County, TN.
